This is good for two reasons: He's hidden and he's potentially free. One drops normally have two big problems: they won't last too long, or if they do they become a liability. And if you don't get them on turn 1, you probably won't ever play them. Rick gets passed both of those. And don't look at his ability just as reinforcement. Think about him with finishing move, medical attention, lanterns in love and the like.

If you play his ability does it count as recruiting the character or simply putting it into play and are you able to put him into play outside of the recruit phase I do not believe so but just want to make sure.

Well to answer that, i will say "The card doesn't say anything about you being able to play him outside of recruit phrase. So, it just means you will be able to play him during your recruit phrase for free as long as you discard an Avengers Character Card."
